Snoring & Sleep Apnea Basics
Snoring happens when airflow causes tissues in the upper airway to vibrate. It may be simple snoring, but frequent loud snoring can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea.
Possible Warning Signs
| Nighttime Signs | Daytime Signs |
|---|---|
| Loud frequent snoring | Excessive sleepiness |
| Witnessed breathing pauses | Morning headaches |
| Choking, snorting or gasping | Trouble concentrating |
| Restless or interrupted sleep | Fatigue or irritability |
Diagnosis
NHLBI says a healthcare provider may review symptoms and risk factors and order a sleep study to determine whether sleep apnea is present and how severe it is.
Evidence-Based Treatment
- Healthy lifestyle changes where appropriate.
- Positive airway pressure such as CPAP.
- Oral appliances for selected patients.
- Orofacial therapy or surgery in certain cases.
- Follow-up to confirm treatment is working.
